In today’s ultra-fast-paced world technology has become THE key differentiator for businesses to set themselves apart from the competition. By the same token, without first hand optics on the latest and greatest technologies and how they’re changing the marketplace and affecting the consumer, businesses will fall behind . . . guaranteed! This means that business leaders who hold positions of influence in companies must make smart and agile decisions about how to embrace and adopt the newest technologies to grow their verticals.
If you’re in the role of a CIO or CTO trying to map out the 3-5 year company outlook, how do you assess the complex technology landscape and distinguish the forest from the trees? What kinds of technologies will be most crucial for supporting your lines of business, while keeping the customers happy and sales flowing? How do you know whether a new technology is going to be a boom or a bust? These are some of the points we’ll consider as we take a deeper look at key technologies that are critical for IT business leaders to have in their strategy portfolio going forward.
The Nexus of Forces
If you stop to think about the trajectory of technology changes over the past 3 decades, from the introduction of the PC in the 1980s, to the internet in the 90s, to the age of social media in the 2000s, and up to the current age of mobility . . . the increasingly rapid pace of technological transformation is quite phenomenal.
We’re now in the middle of what Gartner research calls the “Nexus of Forces” or the integration of Social, Information, Cloud, and Mobile. According to Gartner, “The nexus of forces describes the convergence and mutual reinforcement of four interdependent trends: social interaction, mobility, cloud, and information. The forces combine to empower individuals.
The “Nexus of Forces” offers a very useful framework for understanding the way technology is revolutionizing business and society today at all levels to transform the way we live, think, and work. Throughout the following series, we’ll take a closer look at each of these four focus areas in order to better understand what the main takeaways are for CIOs and CTOs. In the process, we’ll learn how they should be leveraging the latest emerging technologies to drive growth and create value within their business verticals.
In the next segment, we’ll explore in more detail what the first segment of the Nexus known as Social tells us about the digital world we live in and how social and collaboration technologies are impacting us today in unprecedented ways.
